Rockies Moon

posted Sunday, 29 June 2008

We drove through Colorado on the way to Oregon.

Stopping along the way, I shot many pictures, and promptly
moved on to the Oregon stuff, once we arrived.

This one comes from the western slope, the Colorado River
is directly behind me.

Not as hot today.  Looks even better for tomorrow.

I could take highs in the high 60's and 70's, for the entire summer.

I don't like hot weather.

Hi Horold -

Love the photos - keep them coming.

I think about you guys often, wishing I could be in "big mountain" country, and hoping that all is well with you.

By the way, at our 50th (egads! yikes!) CHS high school reunion, July 17-19, I will probably see Paul Williams and his wife Joan, now living outside Grand Rapids. Paul was rated by the Detroit Free Press as the #1 Michigan high school skier for four years (1955-1958). Paul was a Caberfae product. For a number of years, his mom and dad managed the ski shop at Caberfae (that sold skis, poles, pants, sweaters, jackets, etc.). In those days, Shelter was pretty much the same as it is today, but the two peaks did not exist, and most of the serious action was on North Ridge (now out of the picture).

I'll send you a photo that Paul took of me in 1959. We were fooling around on #8 on the North Ridge in mid-March (real spring skiing!) and taking pictures of each other, trying to strike a pose of the reverse shoulder turn made famous by Stein Erickson. This picture is one that, I feel, captures not only the technique of the day, but also some of the style of that time - knickers, high socks (Lederhausen), white button-down shirt, no hat, and a lot of fun! I relish those times, and Caberfae will always remain special.

Peace.

Talk to you again soon, Harold.
